At Good Samaritan Orphanage, our number one priority is caring for our children, orphaned by HIV/AIDS. But there is more to our mission of caring than phyiscal needs:
- Education
- Ministry
- AIDS awareness
It is imperative that Tanzanian orphans are not only physically saved from a futile future, but also educated globally, spiritually, and endowed with the knowledge of the dangers and realities of HIV/AIDS so that future generations will not have to suffer as these children have.
Have you ever considered how very difficult it can be for children who have lost their parents because of HIV/AIDS? It is especially difficult for the children of East Africa where supplies and funds are limited. However, have you considered how much of a difference you can make in their lives, even in the smallest way? These children are being left without proper parental care and love. Some are already infected by HIV waiting to die once the disease explodes.
Social services (such as education and health care) and basic needs (such as food, clothing, shelter, etc.) are no longer a right but rather a dream that will never come true if no one intervenes for the children of Tanzania. Without a place like Good Samaritan, these children would have no choice other than living on the streets in packs, eating from trash cans, stealing, and entering prostitution to survive. Thus, life to them is desperate and meaningless. They live with no hope or purpose, only waiting to die. It is just a matter of time.
But it doesn't have to be that way. With the support of others, Good Samaritan Orphanage is making a difference. These children will grow up to become future leaders of their community, and perhaps even their country. Because they experience an opportunity for a healthy life, they can make a difference for the future of others. Good Samaritan wants to save more children. And you can help.
The Reverand Doctor Robert Mbinda, the creator and facilitator of GSO, is a priest of the Anglican Church in Tanzania. He earned a M. DIV (1986) from Trinity School for Ministry in Ambridge near Pittsburgh and D. Min (1993) UNISA, and taught New Testament and Homiletics in Seminaries in Tanzania and Botswana. He ministered Parishes in rural and urban areas and currently serves at the Anglican Cathedral in Mbeya in Southern Highland of Tanzania. He also ran a development project for World Vision and raised six children.
He and his wife, Mariam, (a nurse midwife) were challenged by the orphan situation in Tanzania and moved by Faith, Love, and Christian Commitment to do something for the dozens of children without parents or local institution to care for them. These children need to be loved, cared for, and comforted.
They truly care because God cares. Faith in Action!
The difference between the facilities that we currently have and what we need to accomodate and care for the childen is great. And there are many children on the waiting list, whom we are unable to accomidate with our current facilities.
Until now, the orphanage has had no electricity. All the cooking has been done by Mariam and volunteers over charcoal fires. But because of money raised through the efforts of Holy Cross, St. John, and the other churches, the orphanage may have electricity soon. Because the closest electrical grid is miles and miles away and the expensive laying of electical cables would take funds away from other, more immediate needs such as food and shelter, solar energy is being looked into for the compound.
And there are many other aspects to the facilities, such as phone service, sanitation, running water, etc. that require funds to make them a reality.

PARTNERSHIPS
In addition to single donations, we are seeking people and organizations who would be willing to enter into partnership with Good Samaritan. Truly, the number of the afflicated is huge, but Good Samaritan provides a way to have an impact, one young life at a time.
$912.50 yearly covers all of a child's expenses - food, clothing, school supplies, medical expenses, and a caring and loving staff. That's only $2.50 per day per child. In addition, we ask that you develop a relationship with a child by mail and/or internet to help them realize people around them and in larger world communities care about them.
Also, the Mbindas reach out to the community in a series of youth workshops, where the teachings of Jesus in the context of HIV/AIDS crisis can bring about change. We usually run seminars once a week in different sections of the region.
People are suffering and dying of AIDS, the disease that has no cure. Running seminars is imperataive in order to create awareness and having people speak openly about HIV/AIDS, sharing experiences, giving moral support to each other, and above all identifying ways to stop spreading the disease. These seminars cost $105.00 each for printing, advertising and delivering the program.
There are many one time contributions that people and churches can make toward buildings, maintenance and infrastructure. Taking care of over 200 children is a big task and is hard work that requires helping hands. We have staff and need to pay their salaries. The lowest income salary is about $1800.00 per year and we ask you to consider sponsoring one of the staff members.
For more information on organizations that have already entered a partnership with Good Samaritan, see Holy Cross Church and St. John Lutheran on our contact page.
MATERIALS
We are also in need of equipment and materials, especially to facilitate our planned technical school. No donation is too small or too few. All materials can be sent DHL. Please see the contact section for our shipping address. Here are just a few examples of what we need:
